Milestones are a major part of parenting. The first loose tooth is a ball of emotions for both the child and the parent. While a visit from the tooth fairy is something to look forward to, there’s a right and a wrong way to get those teeth under their pillow.

Everyone’s seen movies of kids trying to extract their wiggly teeth. Although it may seem like a smart idea to find creative ways to pull it out, self-extraction causes more harm than good. In fact, premature extraction causes tissue damage as well as bone damage. In severe cases, premature extraction causes oral infection.

How Child Teeth Work
Babies usually begin developing teeth at six months. Eruption is the process of teeth breaking through the gum line. The deciduous, or baby, teeth are the 20 temporary teeth they’ll use to eat. In addition to eating, these teeth make room for the permanent teeth after they fall out.

Keep in mind, every loose tooth isn’t making space for its permanent replacement. It’s common for children to knock their teeth loose during activities or when they fall down. If this occurs, it’s advised to contact your pediatric dentist. They’ll determine if their tooth is damaged or infected.

Many parents are unaware that loose teeth have the ability to come out on their own. In fact, a loose tooth occurs based on a cycle. As the permanent teeth form and prepare to break through the gum line, the baby teeth’s roots begin dissolving. The gum ejects the tooth once it’s loose enough to fall out with minimal pain and blood.

Dealing with a Loose Tooth
It’s important that children understand the potential damage associated with prematurely pulling out a loose tooth. Even if it’s awkward, children should leave their teeth to fall out naturally. They can, however, gently wiggle it. Doing this further loosens the tooth so it can fall out with ease.

There are some signs that wiggling is not a good idea. For instance, if the tooth is painful to the touch, leave it alone. This may be a sign it’s not ready to come out and can result in pain, bleeding, and infection. If their tooth is only slightly loose, wiggling it loose is hazardous. Slightly loose teeth may be due to injuries.

Your child’s first loose tooth can be an enjoyable experience for the entire family. If you’re concerned with your child’s loose tooth or they’re in constant pain, be sure to speak with a pediatric dentist. A kids dentist can assist you in coming up with a comfortable solution for you and your child. The only thing you’ll have to worry about is negotiating a reward with the tooth fairy.

If you live in Nevada, be sure to visit the Adaven Children’s Dentistry. Allow this kids dentist office to assist you with extraction and other additional oral concerns.
