There may come a time in your life when you or someone you love needs a commode chair. Commode chairs are used when someone is not able to get to the bathroom for various reasons. To allow someone to use a commode but not have to travel the distance to the bathroom, a commode chair is an option. When that time comes, you will find that there are different commode chair options available.
You may find commode chairs listed differently depending on where you are looking for them. There are some basic differences between the types. It is important that you understand the differences so you can make the best choice based on need.
All in One Commode
An all in one commode may be referred to as a 3 in 1 commode, a portable commode, or a bedside commode. This type of commode is great for someone that is able to make it to the bathroom during the day but may need a closer one at night. This commode has a raised toilet seat and a toilet safety frame. This commode has a lid for the toilet seat and a steel or aluminum frame providing stability to the user. It also has a bucket underneath. The bucket can be removed and the unit can be placed over the toilet in the bathroom to give a raised seat and a frame to which your loved one can hold on.
Drop Arm Commode
This type of commode is good for someone with decreased mobility. One of the arms can be dropped to the side so that you can help your loved one transition easily to the commode. This option comes on many different commodes giving you many options if you need this ability.
Padded Commode
This type of commode is perfect for someone that does not want a hard plastic seat. The plastic is much easier to clean, which is why many commodes come in hard plastic. That may be completely uncomfortable for your loved one and there are padded options available. The padded seats can be cleaned, also, but they may become stained. Many commodes with padded seats also have armrests.
Bariatric Commode
A bariatric commode is a heavy-duty commode that can support a lot of weight. These commodes have bigger seats to allow room for a larger person. They can safely hold 300 to 1,000 pounds.
Folding Commode
This type of commode can fold up and be moved out of the way when not in use. It can also move from room to room if your loved one does not want to stay in the same place. This commode can travel well since it folds up neatly.
